Aroview: A disturbing yet poetic masterpiece in which Robert Mitchum is mighty mean as a psychopathic preacher pursuing two runaways across the American South.

5 stars (Exceptional) C'mon people! Five stars for the set design, process photography and Stanley Cortez' camerawork alone. And then there's the unearthly atmosphere, the performances...a wondrously strange masterpiece. ~HiFi
2 stars (Good Try) ~mproctornz
5 stars (Exceptional) A gothic fairytale with Mitchum at his most mythical. After it was initially received poorly on release, Laughton was so crushed he never directed again. He didn't count on its lingering appeal. Stays with you for years. ~Regando
5 stars (Exceptional) This is in so many ways the most perfect American film, with a pitch perfect Robert Mitchum, dreamy visuals, nightmare-logic storyline, and some of the spookiest shots this side of horror. Southern Gothic personified. ~Pop&Coffee
5 stars (Exceptional) I'd like to go back in time and kick the arse of every critic who slammed this and every audience member who stayed away, so that we were robbed of more movies directed by Charles Laughton. ~Pearce
3 stars (Good Enough) It has genuine suspense even after rewatches and 60+ years. There are some great black and white performances from Mitchum, Winters, and Gish plus you can imagine the camera work influencing directors like Tim Burton. ~Tubbs
3 stars (Good Enough) Beware of cut versions of this movie…good if it the fully restored version. Very good cinematography. ~emjay
