Aroview: Oscar-winning drama contrasts sunlit Chekhovian lyricism with the dark undercurrents of Stalinist Russia during the "Great Purge", when Communist officials as well as a purported million citizens considered "enemies of the people" were arbitrarily executed by the state in the late 1930s.

Dir. Mikhalkov also offers his striking presence as a decorated Colonel whose idyllic family summer is ominously intruded upon by a ghost-of-the-past relative.
