Lives of Others, The
Aroview: Compelling dramatisation of the political tensions between artists and authorities in 80's East Germany, this widely celebrated arthouse hit won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film.
Certainly a remarkably assured debut feature for its writer-director, this astute examination of compromise and corruption under communism evokes authentic period atomsphere and has performances to match, though we were less entirely convinced by the pivotal character arc of the militant Stasi operative. Its legions of avid fans would of course beg to differ!

5 stars (Exceptional) A fascinating depiction of loyalty and betrayal from opposite poles of oppression. A subtle proposal that love and integrity can overcome loneliness and sterile power. Superb acting especially in understated last scene: memorable. ~rakau
