4 stars (Very Good) This is my favourite adaptation. Jane is plain. Lowood is heartbreaking and Jane's triumph of spirit is really demonstrated in Zefferelli's film. John Hurt is mercurial and mysterious as he should be. Best wedding gown too! ~didi
5 stars (Exceptional) 1995 stellar cast weathers well. Paquin, Gainsbourg, Plowright & Hurt, briefly aided by Maria Schneider, do the heavy lifting. Over-decorated 19thC interiors, as in plush versions of Jane Austen novels, are avoided, helped by an economic storyline. ~Sandy
