Fear Eats the Soul
Aroview: A sort of remake of Douglas Sirk's older woman-younger man melodrama "All That Heaven Allows", with added plot weirds countered by typical Fassbinder understatement, featuring his then lover El Hedi ben Salem as an Arab guestworker who starts a impossible relationship with an older German woman.
An unexpectedly compassionate film set in a nasty and sharp world, a key work by a key director in world cinema in the 1970s.

4 stars (Very Good) Memorable, complex and likely to be relevant to Germany today. ~Sandy
5 stars (Exceptional) A fine new print of a great movie which I first saw 50 years ago. It's a powerful critique of German racism, misogyny & ageism. Could such a brave film be made in Germany today? Emmie is just marvellous & Todd Haynes' commentary insightful ~Sandy
