Aroview: The prolific, though rarely seen dir. Mizoguchi came to attention with this chronicled downfall of a court-concubine in 17th century Japan, infused with a certain wry pessimism. Visually, the film has a mysterious, misted quality reminiscent of Robert Bresson. Toshiro Mifune has a small part, before being decapitated.
