Van Gogh
Aroview: The ultra-naturalistic style of Maurice Pialat may not seem the best choice for a costume drama about probably the most-often filmed painter in history, but the director's eye for the unsensational and low-key pays dividends in this rewarding, occasionally disturbing film.

4 stars (Very Good) There is a reasonable balance between biography (with a few snippets of other painters) and a slice of (easy on the eye) provincial life. Some no nonsense editing keeps the story moving. Acting honours to Gerard Sety as Gachet. ~Tubbs
5 stars (Exceptional) A superb print of this sustained masterpiece. Economical & gripping from the start. Fine acting by both major & minor characters.Only Pialat - a painter - could have made this. Ravishing, but portrayed with a curious lack of class distinction. ~Anon
