Following Bacon's (Derek Jacobi) sado-masochistic affair with a smalltime crim in the late 1960s London, a rare aesthetic beauty is achieved without sacrificing narrative, and the period evocation is sublimely atmospheric. Numbering among the creepier hangers-on, Tilda Swinton and Anne Lambton are an added bonus.

4 stars (Very Good) An interesting screenplay which concerns Bacon's relationships more than his painting. The set designs and other period details are well done but towering over everything is Derek Jacobi's performance. ~Tubbs
