Gummo
Aroview: The writer of KIDS turns the camera on his hometown, Xenia, Ohio, selectively seeking out the disenfranchised, the bored and the ugly to distinctive effect.
Semi-improvised and using mainly non-actors, 'plot' is eschewed in favour of a colourful slate of largely unrelated snapshots, most successful when, like KIDS, it glimpses a rarely honest view of an adolescent underclass. Though sometimes undisciplined, the young talent (Korine was only 21), never comes up short on potent, imaginative images.
