Summer of Sam
Aroview: Getting some distance from his usual street-scene, Spike Lee lets off a real firecracker of a film, set during the heatwave summer of 1977, while the 'Son of Sam' serial killer was terrorising New York.
Lee combines the camera-panache of Scorcese with a mature eye for youthful antics, weaving together storylines of an Italian-American neighbourhood with the aid of some fine screen performances from John Leguizamo, Adrian Brody, Mira Sorvino and Ben Gazzara. Soundtrack pounds to both the disco and punk sounds of the era.

4 stars (Very Good) Overlong, unfocused, gaudy, loud and leering, but a host of excellent performances and an admirable breadth and ambition. ~HiFi
