Aroview: John Sayles, the doyen of American independents, succeeds all Johnny-Come-Lately's with an arresting, multi-layered fable that integrates mature character study and compulsive plotting.
Set in a struggling Alaskan fishing village, the petty bickering and latent feuding among the residents foreshadows escalating adversity for the dignified, believable romance that evolves between divorced local David Strathairn and divorced drifter Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio (both superb). Trouble indeed comes to a head and elevates to an almost fully-blown survivalist thriller, the implicit dread paying off both intelligently and unexpectedly, right through until the controversial (yet entirely appropriate) ending.
