Men with Guns
Aroview: Criminally denied a theatrical release, this masterful study of Third World realities is arguably prolific indie dir. John Sayles most accomplished yet.
Pursuing his humanistic vision into an anonymous, militarised corner of Latin America, a complacent, elderly doctor (Federico Luppi) journeys to various remote villages to visit students he has trained, only to find they've been taken away by men with guns. Conjuring a dense atmosphere out of the tropical jungle, this amply rewards with its unsentimental characters and flourishes of visual poetry.
