Lola Montes
Aroview: The life of the famous 19th century courtesan provides the basis for this sophisticated portrayal of the capriciousness of fate, which leads to the once-celebrated Lola (Martine Carol) recreating famous episodes from her own life as a cheap circus act (with Peter Ustinov as the ringmaster). Some critics saw Ophuls' swansong as his crowning work, with its baroque sets and superb use of colour.
