Spain 1999, 97 minutes
Dir. Pedro Almodovar
In Spanish with English subtitles
Rating: [R16]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama / Female-centric
Feat. Cecilia Roth
Aroview: Almodovar's "celebration of mother and womanhood" has been hailed as something of a departure for the director, though in fact all of his (beloved) trademarks are in full bloom despite more serious subject matter.
Devastated after the accidental death of her teenage son, a 38-year-old woman (Cecilia Roth) finds strength and healing in the cradle of other troubled souls of the fairer sex - a trans-sexual hooker, an aging stage diva and a disavowed nun. Again coutured to perfection, the Spanish auteur proudly borrows from Hollywood classic melodramas like ALL ABOUT EVE and especially A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE, which is thematically and theatrically seamed into the complex narrative.

4 stars (Very Good) After single mother, Manuela, loses her teenage son in a tragic accident, she goes to Barcelona in search of the father - where she encounters some highly colourful characters. Embraces human emotion in all its outrageousness. ~GenXGirl
5 stars (Exceptional) ~Milana
3 stars (Good Enough) The screenplay has some humorous touches but unless Antonia San Juan's character of Agrado is involved it doesn't rise to any great heights. Agrado is a step up from anyone else on show. ~Tubbs
5 stars (Exceptional) One of his best ~emjay
1 star (Turkey) 4/5; Original title: "Todo sobre mi madre" ~Anonz
