Nanook of the North
Aroview: Landmark early documentary that was also dir. Flaherty's debut, depicting life for a plucky Eskimo family who use all their ingenuity to survive in the icy wastes of northern Canada. While many have questioned the film's 'realism', the vitality of Nanook and his precarious relationship to the environment is depicted with a beautiful, generous sense of life, especially in the undoubted highlight, the igloo-building sequence.
