Endurance
Aroview: Quietly profound docu-drama on the life of the 1996 Olympic 10,000 metre champion, Haile Gebrselassie, gives unique insight into the man behind the gold medalist. Combining actual footage and dramatic recreations where people play themselves, the award-winning director adopts the style of doco film pioneer Robert Flaherty in letting the action and location speak for itself, with little dramatic enhancement save for a superlative orchestral and indigenous score. This ethnographic view of international sport comes as a welcome antidote to all the bombast of Western commercialism.
