Dir. Marcel Ophuls
In French, German, English with English subtitles
Genres: Documentary / Controversy, War

Aroview: A Classic. Investigating life and death in the Occupied France city of Clermont-Ferrand during WWII, chiefly through interviews, this provides an unparalleled insight into the psychology of civilians in wartime – be they collaborators or resistors, neutral or committed. Immensely controversial in France (initially banned) for shattering the myths of the Resistance, the crossplay of the testimonies (which often contradict) is complex and engrossing, and more than worth the huge running time.
