Animal Factory
Aroview: Retaining the indie principles that distinguished TREES LOUNGE, dir. Buscemi crafts unflashy, insightful drama out of ex-con Edward Bunker’s (STRAIGHT TIME) prison memoirs from the 1970s.
Edward Furlong is a middle-class kid thrown in the deep end for selling pot, who is ambiguously ‘looked after’ by head-convict Willem Dafoe, amid the daily graft and violence of the ‘pen’. With a pace that allows the performances to breathe, this also features impressive supporting work, most unusually from a ‘transsexualised’ Mickey Rourke.
