George Washington
Aroview: With impressionistic widescreen photography, this low-key coming-of-age film frames its North Carolinan setting as the key player among its ensemble of mainly non-actor Black teenagers connected by poverty, naivety and modest ambition. With an unmistakable ‘film school’ sensibility (director Terrence Malick is cited as inspiration) this misses the authenticity it strives for, but is nevertheless a much-admired debut by its 25-year-old director.
