Circle, The
Aroview: Banned its native Iran, this compendium of linked stories circumscribes the various oppressions women must suffer under that country’s strict social and religious codes governing divorce, abortion, prostitution and birth of male heirs.
Shot on the run, as the narrative baton is based from tale to tale, this possesses an entirely different energy from most Iranian cinema, with a panicked immediacy that’s also a far cry from the dir.’s former hit, THE WHITE BALLOON.

5 stars (Exceptional) Harrowing and passionate portrait of the plight women endure under strict Muslim law in Iran. Tells the stories of three women, whose paths cross, in a world of constant surveilance, bureaucarcy and inequalities. Devastating and unforgettable. ~GenXGirl
4 stars (Very Good) Amazingly, only 1 main character was an actor. Interview w/Panahi in Extras. Iran & Afghanistan are the sole Islamic states, ironically created by US destruction of secular govts, though Brooks' book & SOLA (look it up) show hope is still alive. ~Sandy
4 stars (Very Good) ~Shorty
