Japan 1963, 143 minutes
Dir. Akira Kurosawa
In Japanese with English subtitles
Rating: [M]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Suspense/Crime, Classics / Hostages & Terrorism, Film Noir

Aroview: Adapted from a crime-novel by Ed McBain, this kidnapping-thriller is a central work in dir. Kurosawa’s series of film noirs, combining crafted suspense and accurate psychology.

Toshiro Mifune plays a tycoon who faces a moral and capitalist dilemma when it’s revealed kidnappers have mistakenly abducted his chauffeur’s son instead of his own. Should he pay the ransom anyway? Initially set in the interiors of one house, this opens out in the second half to epic and suspenseful length, dealing methodically and brilliantly with the consequences of criminal action. One of Kurosawa's most sustained works.
