Royal Tenenbaums, The
Aroview: Spinning another pathologically eccentric comedy, the dir. of BOTTLE ROCKET and RUSHMORE will either have you declining to be amused or else swallowing the whole inspired contraption.
Gene Hackman at least provides actorly substance as the dethroned, exiled patriarch of a family of New York genius-weirdos and their retainers, trying to inveigle himself back into the fold with bullying charm. With visual puns, oddball characters and pedantic mini-lectures on ‘Tenenbaum’ family-history spiralling out of control every five minutes, the baroque trappings are fantastical and undoubtably inventive though perhaps over-rich for some palates.

5 stars (Exceptional) The script is funny as well as emotional, and the actors perfectly cast. The high point of this enjoyable film is the soundtrack, particularly the orchestral rendition of Hey Jude. Also excellent is Alec Baldwin's opening narration. ~dr.strangelove
5 stars (Exceptional) A beautiful, poignant mix of emotion, dark humour and irresistible qurikiness. The brilliant screenplay is lifted even higher by the incredible cast, perfect soundtrack and Anderson's talent for portraying both style and substance in equal measure. ~Wizzums
2 stars (Good Try) ~Tubbs
