Aroview: Jim Carrey chose the wrong horse on which to saddle his dramatic aspirations with this “Capra-esque” tale of a blacklisted Hollywood screenwriter in the 1950s, who suffers amnesia after an accident and is mistaken for a returned soldier by a sodapop small town. Massively long-winded, heavy-handed, derivative, predictable, and deluged in sentiment, and with political pretentions, it bangs on about the irony of the McCarthy-era witch-hunts contravening the Constitution etc., and even has the gall to satirise Hollywood producers that meddle with a writer’s vision. Where were those goons when you needed them for this turkey? Diehard American patriots need only apply.

2 stars (Good Try) The challenge is to swallow the screenplay & then to hang in for over two hours. What doesn't help is Carrey floundering in the lead even with some experienced actors in support. On the plus side the production values are good & there is some fine music. ~Tubbs
