Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Aroview: Visually rich and tasteful ‘anime’ set in a slightly futurised post-WW2 Tokyo, where an anti-terrorist commando, suspended from duty, faces his inner demons.
After bonding with the sister of a suicide-bomber, these two lost souls negotiate a maze of government feuds and conspiracies, with several shootouts in the process. Themes of dehumanisation, freewill and identity are expressed in various dream sequences, this downbeat drama sharing more with the ‘thrillers’ of Beat Takeshi than with most manga. The hand of writer Mamoru Oshii (GHOST IN THE SHELL) is evident in the poetic imagery, slow pacing and emotional complexity.
