At its simplest, the libretto by Schikaneder concerns the journey of true love between a prince and princess - to which are added layers of symbolism, much of it inspired by the rituals of freemasonry. The music, both delightful and sumptuous, was pre-recorded and the singers lip-synch to it, a process which gives dir. Bergman the opportunity to gain an intimate closeness to the performers.
