Stars Look Down, The
Aroview: Gritty account of life in a Northumberland coal mining village was dir. Reed's first notable film and still one of his most successful.
Centred around a young idealist whose resolve to close down a dangerous pit is tested by social pressures, union politics and domestic troubles. Not entirely authentic, but for its time, this was remarkably committed to an unsentimental perspective without a 'happy ending'.
