Aroview: Award-winning debut for British born dir. Kapadia follows the quest of a lone swordsman to escape his brutal paymaster in ancient feudal India.

Although a little simplistic in its characterisations and plot, this benefits from the stunning desert and mountain locations and a pictorial mastery. Based on a Japanese folktale, this also creditably bears the influence of Kurosawa in its swirling action scenes.

4 stars (Very Good) The spoken script of this mesmerising film barely fits a sheet of A4, relying instead on sublime photography; yet Khan's character demands your attention throughout. His pivotal cold feet scene has haunted me ever since I first saw it 20 years ago. Magic ~Jonathan
