Personal Velocity
Aroview: Daughter of playwright Arthur Miller, Rebecca, announces herself as a talent worthy of her famous father on evidence of her second feature – a mature, eloquent triptych based on three of her short stories and each featuring lead actresses working at the top of their game.
Shot on digital video, the grainy format lends an immediate, no-frills realism to the self-contained portraits of three thirty-ish women - a battered wife, a successful book-editor, and a free-spirited waif. Preserving a fine literary quality yet embracing the visual medium with flair and assurance, this deservedly took out the top prize at Sundance. Not since MYSTERY TRAIN has the whole been greater than the sum of three parts.
