Weight of Water, The

Aroview: Time-twist thriller, that intercuts a gothic murder-mystery of the late 19th century with present-day marital intrigue.

Set on the Isles of Shoals, where in 1873 a notorious double axe-murder occured, two couples arrive and games of jealousy begin - games that seem to echo past events. Dir. Bigelow makes a bold attempt on a difficult concept that never finally resolves coherently. Though its cast offer gratifyingly passionate moments, amid the brewing storms, unexplained evils and flash editing, over-ambition seems a particular burden here.
