New Zealand 2002, 83 minutes
Dir. Jason Stutter
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Comedy, Action/Adventure / Martial Arts, Spoof
Feat. Jemaine Clement, Sam Manu, Linda Tseng
Aroview: An engagingly cheesy martial-arts parody that derives freshness from its unique South Pacific flavour and the comic ingenuity of its star and co-writer, Jemaine Clement.
Entirely post-dubbed to mimic the style of Z-grade kung fu flicks, Clement scores most of the laughs voicing both his own character, “Action Fighter” and that of the gentle hero, the Tonjan Ninja himself. Kudos also to first-time dir. Stutter who self-funded the film, marshals some quite sophisticated set pieces and well achieves his objective of treating the viewer - ‘ninja’ fan or not - to a flippin’ good time.

3 stars (Good Enough) A martial-arts spoof, though more original and funny than the likes of 'Kung Pow', this Kiwi-Pacific comedy with intentionally bad voice dubbing is a silly ninja outing that will not be appreciated by everyone. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) First saw this movie about 5 years ago and laughed from start to finish. ~maraea
5 stars (Exceptional) Essential NZ classic. Love it every time I watch it. ~tolly
