aka: Belleville Rendezvous
France 2003, 78 minutes
Dir. Sylvain Chomet
Rating: [M]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Family, Cult / Animation
Aroview: Witty, inventive and lovingly designed with retro-chic flair, this 'all-ages' animated feature is distinctively and delightfully French.
Less to do with the "triplets" than a benign old lady who trains her lonely grandson to be a cycling champion - she finds him kidnapped while peddling the 'Tour de France', and so begins a quest to rescue him from the imposing metropolis of "Belleville".
Though the narrative doesn't ultimately achieve full flourish, its a visionary treasure brimming with ideas and quaint, nostalgic charm, typified by the original jazz musical score by Benoît Charest.

5 stars (Exceptional) The music is perfectly matched to this beautiful animation. So nice to see something other than Pixar and Walt D. Just cool in every way. ~Baby
5 stars (Exceptional) A cyclist is kidnapped from the Tour de France by mysterious gangsters, and his grandmother travels to the city of Belleville where she tracks him down with the help of a musical trio. Just magical, a real treasure. ~GenXGirl
4 stars (Very Good) Although the screenplay weakens towards its end up till then it will be one of the better adventures about a granny and her multipurpose train-spotting dog you will probably see. The animation is outstanding and is so good little dialogue is required. ~Tubbs
