Dir. Takashi Miike
In Japanese with English subtitles
Rating: [R18]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Action/Adventure / Psycho, Controversy
Feat. Tadanobu Asano, Nao Omori, Shinya Tsukamoto
Aroview: Dir. Takashi Miike earned his notoriety with this wincingly violent revenge thriller in which a bent ex-cop (played by "Tetsuo" director, Tsukamoto) wreaks havoc in the Shinjuku underworld by turning the gangsters of Japan against each other like rabid pit-bulls.
At the hub of the chaos is a masochistic, relentless Yakuza called Kakihara who seeks revenge for the killing of his boss, but meets his match in the physical powerful psychopath known as Ichi the Killer. Its interludes of hardcore sadism and sexual violence have stuck in censor's throats the world over, though it cuts merciful slack with its dashes of black comedy.

4 stars (Very Good) Controversially hyper-violent, sexualised, sadistic, and psychotic, Miike shows us why he is the Japanese king of cult. This is definitely not for everyone, and may have even the most hardened of viewers feeling squeamish. ~Tom H
4 stars (Very Good) Hmmm, one hestitates to call this a lot of fun, though it is if you have a certain sensibility. But then it could also be a date movie, just not *that* kind of date. ~stve
4 stars (Very Good) If you can get past the extreme graphic violence that Takashi Miike is famous for, there are plenty of engaging and odd characters to keep you entertained. ~trauma_hound412
