Beyond, The
Aroview: This eerie celluloid nightmare from Italian gore-meister Fulci can be fully appreciated in this uncut version, restoring its succession of 'money shots' to keep horror fans squirming with delight.
Set around an aged hotel in the Louisiana swampland, this follows a young woman's discoveries which eventually lead to the gateway to Hell! Events occur without much plot logic, but carry a certain awful potency. Perhaps still too ragged, badly acted and revolting to appeal to most, this certainly has gathered a considerable cult.

4 stars (Very Good) This is one of the few surreal horror movies that actually resembles a dream. Fulci actually pulls off some remarkable atmosphere to go with his shoddy gore effects. Watch for hints that the cast are having a ball cracking each other up. ~Pearce

5 stars (Exceptional) Don't go into this looking for plot holes, lean into the film, embrace the dream logic. This is pure cinema. The combination of sound & image evokes the experience of a beautiful nightmare. ~Dave
