Quatermass (TV Mini Series)
Aroview: Sir John Mills gives a great late performances as the legendary 1950s hero Professor Quatermass in this TV mini-series conclusion to Nigel Kneale's science-fiction series.
As Britain struggles with the collapse of civilisation and the rise in murderous youth gangs, a monstrous power in space seems to threaten the world, as hordes of hippy-ish 'planet people' are drawn to megalithic sites for slaughtering. Here, Quatermass is depicted as a cynical and worn-out old man, who fights events with rationalistic fury, a far cry from his earlier incarnations.
The setting too is depicted with pre-apocalyptic imagination, while the parallels to 1960s and 70s youth culture make for a disturbing comment on the modern world.
