Sonny
Aroview: Brave directorial debut for Nicolas Cage, proffering the tale of a dischargee from the army (Franco) who has been handraised as a gigolo by his brothel-keeping mother (Blethyn) in the dens of New Orleans.
Wanting to break away from his preordained future in the sex industry, Franco judges the options, which includes romance with fellow whore Suvari. Shot through with offhand realism, this eventually fails to break free from the weight of cliche. Still, some strong scenes linger in the mind.

2 stars (Good Try) A bit like its director - uneven. Whilst Mena Suvari really struggles a dream cast of Franco, Blethyn, and Stanton with Cassel thrown in should have produced a better result. You get the feeling that the director was trying a little too hard to shock. ~Tubbs
