Friday Night Lights
Aroview: A strong drama set in a small Texas town, where high school football (like rugby in New Zealand) is treated with near-religious devotion.
Based on a 1988 book by H.G. Bissinger, which controversially chronicled the pressures and fortunes of a real-life team, this soft-pedals the social critique for a more character-focused portrait of players, coach and townsfolk. As a study of unrealistic expectations on a huge scale, this will certainly strike a chord with many local viewers. Thornton is excellent, as usual, in the lead and dir. Berg elicits enough grit from his cast that the periodic injections of Hollywood sentiment are nullified.
