Penny Serenade (1941)
A lengthy but well performed emotional piece.
I'll Be Seeing You (1945)
The two leads are fine and they help make the melodramatic segments watchable.
Coal Miner's Daughter (1980)
The early scenes set in Sissy's home coal town are the best although her subsequent musical performances are well done.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable (2017)
Even though it looked as if a couple of the Leningrad Cowboys had found their way onto the set there was little interest to be found in anything else.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
I didn't think Mr. Depp looked comfortable in this. However, the supporting cast included the great Helena Bonham Carter and David Kelly, and the children importantly were excellent. The artwork and set design were outstanding.
A Private War (2018)
Marie Colvin has been mentioned in more than one documentary about other war correspondents & all have been in glowing terms. She was one courageous person. This drama impresses because it is unflattering & well performed by Pike.
U-Turn (1997)
Nick Nolte and Bill Bob Thornton are excellent and they head a very strong supporting cast who between them see the screenplay through.
Gracie (2008)
Carly Schroeder is very good and so are the soccer re–enactment scenes. Unfortunately, the screenplay is easily distracted and the ending is at odds with the unromantic tone that had preceded it.
Stick It (2006)
The female casting headed by Missy Peregrym was very good as was the gymnastic action. The screenplay was mostly routine and it would have been better for it to have stayed that way instead of getting silly in its later stages.
Life Is Beautiful (La vita e bella) (1998)
The first half is better than the second – in particular the weak ending which is very commercial Oscar material. However, there is Benigni, an old school visual comedian, & some of his antics are a delight. The period setting details are well done.
