Jacqueline McKenzie excels with a performance that is spread over several different moods – some easy some difficult. A very good screenplay that has some genuine drama and a soundtrack that is intelligently used.
The early series of scenes where the family arrives and tries and find its feet in Manila are terrific. Unfortunately, the screenplay follows formula after that and the closing scenes are not very strong.
Catherine Frot is dependable and usually worth a watch. The content here is light but it does have some interesting snippets of information about roses.
He obviously could snap photos – it is a pity he didn't use his talent on something that may have benefited society such as recording poverty and working class living conditions.
