From Prada to Nada (2011)
The characters are very thin and lead pretty useless lives but the film could find an audience.
Bucket of Blood, A (1959)
A simple story with simple props – simply enjoyable.
Mental (2012)
Uneven but there are many good bits that can't be ignored. Being a comedy it would have benefited by being shorter. LaPaglia is fine but the ladies (young and old) take the plaudits. Collette is terrific as usual with Kerry F in an unusual role for her.
Brain That Wouldn't Die, The (1961)
The plot is so ridiculous you cannot dislike it.
Invitation, The (2015)
Has some good reviews and included in NZFF 2015 but I didn't detect anything above the ordinary on a first viewing – which was hampered by mumbling in beards by a couple of the characters – so will watch again with subtitles. Good end music.
Mission: Impossible 3 (2006)
Heavily reliant on noisy special effects – it doesn't really stand apart from the many others in the genre except for the theme tune.
Unbroken (2014)
Early parts are impressive – props, set designs & special effects.Make up do a good job with the raft scenes but the Japanese segment is unconvincing e.g. the prisoners' condition is inconsistent from scene to scene & some bits are over dramatic.
Firefox (1982)
Way too long for the material on offer but it has an excellent British support cast eg. Freddie Jones, Warren Clarke et al. to add interest and quality.
Far Off Place, A (1993)
The adventure story is reasonable but the locations and photography are the standouts.
Original Sin (2000)
Well mounted but not a great deal happens and when it does its not that interesting.
