Tymar3’s Film Reviews

- Insomnia (1997)
- Deftly–handled tension and ambiguity. The unravelling of relationships and perspectives is much more well–balanced than Nolan's good but rather bludgeoning remake.
- Scarlet Empress, The (1934)
- Superb lighting. Music beautifully synchronised with action. Outrageously ornate grotesquerie for decor. Good acting all round, especially Marlene's transformation from innocent to mature. Some interesting framing and tracking shots.
- Russian Ark (2002)
- Arty, perplexing. You won't learn anything about Russian art, history or culture; it's an immersive experience with no detail, context, or explanation; imaginative but apparently random. Film buffs will appreciate the technique.
- Pulp Fiction (1994)
- I can only say it's not for everyone. Gave it about 20 minutes; couldn't relate to the characters or story or style. Wikipedia calls it a black comedy but we didn't get any hint of that.
- Dr. Mabuse, The Gambler (1922)
- Intense, dramatic. Wonderful music to support it. Way longer than the 86 minutes claimed above; it's 2 parts on 2 discs, total about 4 1/2 hours.
- Duellists, The (1977)
- A visual feast. The simple storyline spaces out the action with mild suspense, making the twist on honour and duelling rules at the end lightly amusing.
- Blu-Ray $24.95
- Bernie (2011)
- Quite a thought–provoking pastiche of human nature, need and greed. Not what I think of as a comedy, though not grim either.
- DVD $14.95 | Blu-Ray
$19.95 $10
- Twelve Chairs, The (1970)
- Good lightweight fun.
- Quick Change (1990)
- Comedic suspense all the way to the end scene.
- Taking of Pelham 123, The (1974)
- Very cops'n'robbers tough–guy stuff. Entertaining without trying to be too clever.
