Aroview: Fitfully creepy American remake of the influential Japanese horror film that surprisingly manages to replicate the foreboding (and uniquely Japanese) ambience that made the original so indelible.
As the journalist investigating and cursed by THAT videotape, Naomi Watts follows the plot map of the original with the odd deviation intended to exploit the chill factor (an added sequence of a disturbed horse is a standout). Purists might find it hard to fall under the spell of a “copy”, but otherwise it’s certain to prickle the spines of those weaned on the smug, ironic horror of the post-“Scream” era.

3 stars (Good Enough) Scary American remake that fails to add much to the Japanese original but retains and recreates most of what is creepy. Not particularly imaginative with the frightening child premise, but it is a remake after all...~Tom H
