Punch-Drunk Love

USA 2002, 91 minutes
Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson
Rating: [M]
Genres: Comedy / Romance, Independent, Black Comedy

Aroview: Popular mainstream comic Adam Sandler takes a left turn for the director of MAGNOLIA and BOOGIE NIGHTS in this doggedly off-beat yet beguiling romantic comedy.

Extending his goofy screen persona in more surreal directions, he plays a socially awkward toilet plunger salesman with seven domineering sisters, who increasingly has trouble containing his violent impulses. A crisis of transformation begins when attractively goofy Emily Watson enters his life and offers him unconditional love.

Although not quite a knockout, this strays far enough from the usual romantic cliches to stake out its own originality.
