Door in the Floor, The

Aroview: An adult melodrama charting the dissolution of a loving marriage scarred by the tragic loss of their two sons, some years earlier.

Taking place over one summer in their East Hampton idyll, successful children's author Jeff Bridges hires an aspiring young assistant who develops an unlikely relationship with his estranged wife, Kim Basinger. Faithfully adapted from the first third of John Irving's sprawling novel "A Widow for One Year", this works with strong material though the mainstream treatment polishes over the cracks and rough edges where perhaps the drama really lies.
