Dark Water
Aroview: Translation to New York of the spooky Japanese horror of the same name, with a recent divorcee (Connelly) and her young daughter moving into a malevolent, concrete block apartment on Roosevelt Island.
With a mysterious plumbing leak darkening their ceilings, they discover the environs are haunted by the secrets of past tenancies. Managing to concoct a fairly convincing atmosphere of dank malevolence, this also adopts the original's suggestive (rather than explicit) sense of terror. Certainly a far cry from the usual Hollywood crassness, this may surprise sceptics.
