A Common Thread
Aroview: A pregnant 17 year-old (Naymark) in rural France finds anonymous refuge as an apprentice to a provincial silk embroider (Ascaride), grieving the recent loss of her son.
As they spend the days stitching and conversing, each lets the other's influence subtly transform them, lending the drama a wonderful forthrightness, akin to Catherine Breillat (A MA SOUER) though without the sensationalism. Although perhaps this finally weaves a little too much sentiment into the pattern, it remains an auspicious and original debut for dir. Faucher.
