USA 2005, 97 minutes
Dir. Gus Van Sant
Rating: [M]
Genres: Drama / Independent, Pop/Rock
Topics: Experimental.
Feat. Michael Pitt, Lukas Haas, Asia Argento
Aroview: A questionable meditation on a besieged, drug-addled rock-star, clearly modelled on Kurt Cobain, as he inhabits a remote, decaying mansion in the days before his ambiguous death.
Dir. Van Sant's vision is perhaps too 'eventless' (or just plain 'difficult') to propel this work to great popularity, but as phonecalls go unanswered and bandmates drop in, the anti-drama builds to a certain sense of existential confusion and dread. Adding a slightly queasy voyeuristic fascination with its young protagonist, and an oddly textured soundtrack, this will for most be taking a numbing lack of narrative too far.

4 stars (Very Good) This will not be everyone's cup of tea, but as a fan of the director and of the character portrayed I give it the thumbs up. Strangely hypnotic, odd, very experimental and brave, but definitely watchable. ~GenXGirl
5 stars (Exceptional) A quite arty cinematic para-meditation on Cobain situation; non a 'high-lights only' hagiographical bio-pic. For some watching G V Sant's 'Last Days' again (& again) will offer much reward. Mos' def' in my top 10 OAT. ~Dr_'n'
2 stars (Good Try) It plays like, but not as boring as, a home movie. ~Tubbs
