Topics: Rites-of-passage.

Aroview: The first ever Fijian feature film, this evokes WHALE RIDER with its tale of a young woman (Taito) who aspires to transcend an existence circumscribed by patriarchal tradition on the small island of Rotuma.

The lead character - a girl of special talents - aims to progress to higher education in distant Suva, but finds her eyes opened to the corrupting legacy of colonisation. While the dramatics are small and the message familiar, this provides a fascinating glimpse into Fijian village culture set against a lush tropical backdrop.
