Aro Favourite Grizzly Man

Canada 2005, 104 minutes
Dir. Werner Herzog
Genres: Documentary / Adventure

Topics: Animal Antics.

Aroview: One of dir. Herzog's (AGUIRRE) true classics, this is a devastating glimpse into the life of a self-styled naturalist, whose obsession with Alaskan grizzly bears was strangely profound yet which ultimately proved fatal to him and his girlfriend.

Timothy Treadwell was an ex-surfer and failed actor who spent 13 years in the wilderness coming to terms with the bears and for several years filmed them on video in their habitat, also giving improvised pieces-to-camera in which he eerily resembles a 'Nature Channel' commentator. From this 'found footage' and various interviews Herzog constructs a portrait of Treadwell as visionary yet deluded, critiquing the doomed quest with a sceptical, fascinated respect.
