Night Watch
Aroview: A mega-hit in its native Russia, this sci-fi-horror-action cocktail concerns a running battle on the mean streets of modernday Moscow between Good and Evil, in the form of confederations of vampires, shape-shifters, witches and poor old humanity struggling on in the wake of the Cold War.
Part of an unfolding trilogy based on the novels of Sergei Lukyanenko, this glitters with CGI effects, rocket-powered vehicles, gruesome woundings and a convincing patina of grubbiness, rainwater and rotten glamour. Although the unstoppable chaos of its narrative is a little shaky at times, this convinces with the gleeful style and energy of its director, Khazakstani-born Bekmambetov. Recommended to all serious sci-fi fans and those in need of an action jolt!

4 stars (Very Good) Timur really brings his own visual style to the table in this unique sci-fi blend from Russian author Sergei Lukyanenko. Well-worth seeing for its original universe and visual flair (to be continued in Day Watch)... ~Tom H
3 stars (Good Enough) Not as good as the first time I saw it on the big screen 15 years before but worth a try on DVD. ~Tubbs
