Smiles of a Summer Night
Aroview: An enjoyable, ultimately serious comedy of deception set among the Swedish gentry of the early 20th century who are engaged in a poetic dance of love, marriage and sexual attraction.
Lovingly shot in B&W, this was remarkable in its day for the frankness for which it examined its subjects and it became the film which broke dir. Bergman to an international audience. Still worthy of attention now, it has a matchless grace and streak of bitterness which prevents any lurch into Hollywood falsity.

4 stars (Very Good) Bergman's genius astounds, as ever. Made 70 years ago but still fresh & witty. His interest in the workings of women's hearts is strongly evident. Old Mrs. Armfeldt is very funny. Every frame beautifully composed, lit & memorable. Good extras ~Sandy
